Erik Kubik shares this sad moment about his PS3. My ps3 died this last Monday, right in the middle of some Red Faction Guerrilla multiplayer. The 60 GB system that loved me for the past 2 ½ years croaked. My console and I had been through thick and thin.On that horrifying night, 30 minutes into the game my ps3 suddenly shut down, which I thought was slightly unusual. I powered the system back up, it ran for 5 minutes, beeped, and then shut down while briefly flashing a yellow light and then started flashing a red light before I powered it off completely. From my initial research on the Internet, I would say the power supply or one of the fans went bad. How can this happen? I kept my ps3 in a well ventilated area and I never used the system for more than three hours at a time.
Overall, two and a half years is a good run for a system. My regular Xbox broke after a year and a half. I sold my Dreamcast and Gamecube after a year; and they never broke down on me.
I noticed about three months ago the fans on the system were working really hard. I thought to myself at the time that I should back up my saved games. Why didn’t I do that…?
Now, I come home from work and instead of relaxing with the ps3, I attempt to watch TV or play the Wii or DS; it’s just not the same. I find myself getting bored and thinking about the ps3. Now it sits in the corner, an ominous black coffin at the edge of a slow and painful death, having gasped its last breath earlier. I have a feeling the broken console is mocking me and my despair.
I purchased my ps3 in August of 2007 so the warranty is long expired. I do have a few options though. I could pay Sony $189 dollars to fix it and receive a three-month warranty. Sony would have my black coffin for a week to two weeks. I would receive either a refurbished console or my original one. None of my data from the hard drives would be saved. I could pay a third-party repair service around $100 and they promise to save all my data and have it back to me in three days. They offer a 30-day guarantee. Based on recommendations and their feedback they appear to be legitimate and stand behind their work. Or I could save some out-of-pocket money and sell it on eBay for parts; broken 60 gb ps3’s seem to fetch $130-$150.
My biggest concern is losing the data. I have 40+ hours dumped into some of the games. Games like Fallout 3 and its DLC, Resident Evil 5, infamous and Uncharted 2. The only saving grace in losing this data is that I could clean out my game collection and trade the titles I no longer play on Goozex.
My final option is to try and pinpoint the issue and fix it myself. If it’s the fan or the power supply, those can be purchased online for $30-$50. There are plenty of videos that demonstrate the fixes. However, I run the risk of completely breaking it and wasting my time.

If I decide to get rid of it, I think it’s time I went to my local GS, use some saved up trade-in credit, and pick up a 120 gb slim.
I have a feeling my ps3 was giving me some sort of sign. Like it was telling me that I play too many video games and that I need to cut back a bit. Or maybe it was that I should have acted on the warning signs from four months ago when it started dying.
My last option is to jump on the 360 bandwagon.

Ouch, that's gotta hurt watching your PS3 go on you like that. Let us know which option you end up going with. I would fear losing hard drive data myself, and would hope to be able to retain it. Good luck!
you fool take out the hard drive and keep it, when you buy your next ps3 copy everything onto new hard drive, your a jerk by the way!
Wow u really are a jerk lol lol like the other one said keep the freaking HD and yes, when you buy your next ps3 copy everything onto new hard drive, your a jerk by the way! lol GOD theare are a lot of ways to keep your info
i send my 60gb to sony to replace the lens they dont even touch my HD everything was there
man my 60gb ps3 when out on me too. i was playing MW2 n it just turn off on me =,( ..but i call sony to fix it ..hopefuly they fix it
n this is a guy by the way ..im just yousing my grils account
Oh my God, you silly waste of space jerk, you realise that your ps3's hard drive is removable, and you can copy all the data across to your computer or whatever you have in your house.
Stupid jerk.
Wow You idioits leaving comments your the jerks. Yes you can remove the harddrive but!! When you put it into the new ps3 it will have to be reformated. Shows what you idiots no. Look man sell it on ebay an buy a ps3 slim thats what Im doing.
What you do is pull out the HDD of your PS3 put it into another PS3 back up the data properly.
You can't read PS3 HDD in windows only linux.
Then you could take it to a local TV eletric repair place and get them to do a fix up if it's a fan then that will be super easy to fix up, probably get it back with-in a week or a day.
So so much easier than hoping to get data fixed etc.
Or you buy another PS3 and just do the back up yourself then send off to get fixed.
Consoles these days are incredibly fragile. 3 hours can cause some damage, I usually play for an average of 1 - 2 hours. Make sure you don't get dust stuck in there as well. Good luck with your options!
Sorry to hear it dying on you. I'll take it off your hands if u don't want it. I could always use it for spare parts possibly on my 60GB(250GB)PS3.
OR.... You could look up the Gilsky YLOD repair tutorial on google, go out and spend $30 on a heat gun and thermal compound and fix it yourself. I just fixed my 60g model and I have no intricate electronics repair experience. Why pay someone else to do it when you can fix it cheaper yourself and have fun doing it. It's pretty easy really, it's just intimidating when you read the instructions. I feel more attached to my PS3 now too as corny as that sounds. Look it up, fix it yourself! It's easy and worth it!
Just buy a 250gig MW2/Forza3 360. The new ones are as reliable or more reliable than a ps3.
Yesterday my disk drive stopped working. I was terrified. Having just bought GTA4 and Borderlands and eagerly awaiting Army of 2, I knew I wouldn't hesitate to fix my 60 gig (which I picked up in October 07) at any cost. Hell, I'd probably pay $400 or more just to have the disk drive work again. I love my PS3 too much I guess. Well I went online and it turns out there's some kind of safeguard. Apparently, if you hold down the power button for 10 seconds, then let go and hold it down for another 10, it restarts and gives you the option of literally FIXING the problem. I couldn't believe this actually worked! The machine just gets better and better :D.
Personally, in your situation (which I was practically in) find a local shop who will repair it for $100, the 3 month warranty is nice, but you'll get a new model, they won't give you YOUR 60GB. If you have a shop to repair it, they'll be in closer contact with you and will personally tell you what they can recover. Good luck man.
The same thing happened to me and I found myself asking the same questions as you. I didn't want to pay the repair fee because I didn't want to waste money on a refurbished console that only had a three month warranty. I decided to fix it myself by heating up the processor and GPU. This is information I found online. Although it worked it only lasted about a month and a half before it broke again. So I did the same fix another three times and each time it only gave me about a month of play. I think if you want to make a backup of your saved game data this might be the way to go. This is what I did. I haven't bought a new PS3 yet but I'm planning on getting the slim once I saved up enough money.
I had to delete the last comment cause the dude couldn't write a sentence without dropping the F-bomb. He did note that the PS3 only has one fan it. Keep your comments clean and you can say what you want.
sorry about the F bomb
If you got the yellow light of death then dont even trip its super easy to fix it happend to my ps3 and what I did is i looked up how to fix it all you have to do is open the system and put new thermal paste I was in the same situation as you. I can fix it but depends where you live. If you want to contact me then email me at viceanvalor@gmail.com If you want to send it to sony theyll fix it for 150 or they give you the option of getting the new slim for 135.
jumping on the xbox 360 bandwagon is the BIGGEST mistake you'll be making in your life. that THING is full of crap. it's garbage. if you felt bad your ps3 died on you after 2 plus years, wait till you get the RROD in 6months. your ps3 had served its purpose. time to get a new one....and about the hard disc, you can't recover the data UNLESS you backed it up on an external drive using your ps3. it's not like a memory card where it carries all the datas and then you can upload it. it doesn't work that way.
iv had my 60gb fixed twice 1 i payed and sony payed for the other even tho it was 2 weeks out of 90 day warranty. Its $160 and takes about 3-8 days . On a yellow light your board couldn't of burned out. i went out and got a 250gb slim with 2 yr bestbuy warranty and currently selling the 60gb sony sent me back. You can have sony fix it but take out your HD and sony will send 1 back to you with no HD and u save all your data i did this... don't have to reformat when u put it in. Or if a friend got a ps3 bring your HD 2 him and back it up. i would stay with ps3 only cuz better line up of games and Free Online plus there making new Xbox soon
copy your save game in usb flash memory press triangle on your save then copy it to your usb flash memory
It got my YLOD a couple of days ago. I used a totorial on Youtube to get it working again using a hair dryer :). I doubt itd last long but it gives you enough time to back up your HDD. Check it out on Youtube, search "YLOD hair dryer".
There is a place in Columbus,Oh called the Gamesmith, and they do a processor reball with new higher temp solder and they have a lifetime warranty. I sent my system in and had it back in a week. Was only 100 dollars and you get to keep all you data. Awesome service at a great price. Just search google for gamesmith repairs.
I'm reading all of this wild speculation and it's starting to hurt my head!
Here are the cold facts: To the guy who used a hair dryer, of course it's not fixed right and keeps breaking. You have to re-apply thermal compound to the processors AND use a heat gun with a 750f rating. A blow is not going to cut it.
Here is a link to the proper instructions on repairing your ps3. http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2376
And to the people who keep saying to just keep your HD and swap it into a new one, you are wrong. Putting your old PS3 HD into a new PS3 will not work. The new PS3 will tell you the HD needs to be formatted before the system can start up. It will not let you save all your info from the old PS3. To the guy who wrote this article, I can email you details on fixing it yourself, just let me know and I can help you out. I don't want money or any thing either, no scam.
Wow,the same thing happen to my 40gb ps3 on New Years Eve,It is also out of its warranty. This is what I plan on doing.First repair your system your self using a heat gun and thermal paste maybe a hairdryer can do the trick. Then this will give you just enough time to copy all your save data on to a flash drive. Then trade in your ps3 for a ps3 slim and pay the difference. The problem is even once sony repairs your system, you hear many stories of having to send it back numerous times after.Your best bet is to get a slim.A xbox 360 wont solve your problem it will just make you want to play your ps3 again.I hope this helped.
I went and bought a new system, I'll fix my old one and sell it
YOU CAN GET IT FIXED...SONY JUST UPPED THE PS3 WARRANTY TO 3 YEARS...SO YOU HAVE UNTIL AUGUST OF THIS YEAR TO GET IT FIXED FOR FREE!!!!!!!
Ummmm why not just back up your save data? You have to have another HDD or even a thumb drive or memory card, right? Back it up, then save the HDD if throwing out the ps3.
Also, why is everyone so afraid of "breaking it worse" when fixing things themselves? I have a plan: send it to my repair shop. I guarantee 60 days of workability on service and all parts are anywhere from 30 to 90 days covered. Also, you can buy a 6 month or 1 year extended warranty if you want (for labor).
I'm so confused why so many people are scared of losing data when the ps3 is the easiest console to back up...
I am sorry about your PS3. I love my PS3 too. I think that I maybe die in BORING if my PS3 is broken. You should bring your PS3 to Best Buy because I think they have the Geek Squad that can fix your PS3. Good luck. Add my PSN ID: Haseo106 if you want to have one more friend after yor PS3 gets fixed or U buy a new one.
yea to the guy who has the idea of fixing the ps3 and trading it in for a slim. Good luck with that because once you open it up to fix it, you just tampered with the sticker. Therefore you wont be able to trade it in once they see you opened the ps3 up. Some people just think they have all the answers. My 60gb ps3 just died as well after 2 1/2 yrs. I am upset of losing the copy protected saved data. I saved all my other data on memory stick, but copy protected you cant save on stick. So there goes 50 plus hours of demons souls gone. So i just paid the 189 to have sony fix it. All these videos on how to fix are a joke. they are temporary fixes that last what a month or 2. I dont want to keep repairing my ps3. Also all of you who say put hdd in another ps3 to save data. you cant do that either. do your research. the hdd is encrypted to the ps3 it came with. you will have to reformat on another ps3 & you cant put in pc cause it will not recognize it to save data. Bottom line it sucks if your ps3 dies, especially if you have the best model (60gb ps3). thats the only 1 worth getting repaired cause the backwards compatability. If i had later models, i would of bought new ps3. if you love your 60gb ps3 as i do, pay the money stop being cheap. if you dont have money for top of line console, well then you should be playing 360 or wii.
Actually, there is a way to save protected data. You need to use a computer to do it and you can only use it again on the same ps3, so this means you need to fix that same ps3 and not buy a new one. However, it's still possible to save and reuse that protected data.
yea there is a way to save protected data. i know that its by backing up on an external hdd. but once your ps3 dies that option is out the window. because you cant turn it back on. once you send your ps3 to sony they will pretty much give you a refurbished ps3. they most likely never repair yours & send yours back. Even if they do repair yours the rep even told me ( i talked to a few of them) that they always wipe the hdd clean & reformat. now if you backed up your data & you get your same ps3 back even after the repaired, you can easily restore. Also other plces that repair your ps3 & dont touch hdd, so you can keep all your sav data, i heard a lot of bad experience with them. So thats why i chose to just pay sony.
"Consoles these days are incredibly fragile. 3 hours can cause some damage, I usually play for an average of 1 - 2 hours. "
LOL (friends and i, are playing 5/8 hours a day without problems)
"the 360 worstwagon"
Yeah sure, logical : when a ps3 die, you probably choose other console with X10 more hardware problems (+ no bluray, internet browser, noise, and not a single good game last game)
Iyaaaa! My 60gb died on me on Christmas day, it was exactly 3 years old to the day. Was playing the first level of Modern Warfare 2. It wont read any games, blu-ays or dvd's, think it has something to do with the lens cause browser and everything else still works. i need help! suggestions?
People commenting that he's a jerk are the ones who are morons and idiots.
Yes you can take out the harddrive but it will not work on another ps3, it will need to be reformatted.
Yes you can back up the data on a PC but only in LINUX not in windows.
Reason I know? Because I've been through it.
Now shut up morons and learn from this
I too have experienced a 60gig biting the dust. This is my 3rd console, my third PS3 specifically, something I feel is worth mentioning.
Talked to Sony, they said I can pay the money to get my 60gig back, or I can pay to get a "Slim" model. Seems as if they are doing this with the 60gig owners, original PS3 models. Thinking the 60gig is the issue, for some reason I can't keep one going. This one died after 5 months TO THE DAY of getting it back ,2 months over the warranty.
I'm beginning to think I should invest in a "Slim" and see what happens. I also know an individual who is on his 5th or 6th 60gig. Shocking, yes I know. I also do know people with plenty of launch consoles. Who knows.
i have 2 ps3s u can take out HDD and put it into other 1 it will ask u to reformat you hit NO it will boot up your data
if you get the ps3 fixed then you have to send the HDD back with it and will lose all your data. happened to me. I got a new PS3 though (120 GB) and have the older model they sent back which I unfortunately had the luck of receiving one someone told the wrong problem for. Getting that one fixed though (just 4 days under 90 day warranty when I called in for the box). I heard the older models are having hard times with the updates though so best bet is to upgrade to the slim.
unlucky. i have had mine since sept 07 and has probably been on for at least 8 hours a day be it gaming, videos or music and mine is running smooth. oh i also smoke in my room and that doesnt effect it :)
Why in God's name would you buy a 360 if you are worried about reliability? Either get it fixed, or buy a slim.
Do you really need your save files? Are you really going to go back and play those games? And if you have finished them, thewn no problems here.
Seriously? Mine came from Sony doing the same thing. I know a DOA ps3 is crazy but they replaced so it was great. Anyways just watch the video on taking it apart and just replace the fan because if it was a power supply problem it wouldn't power on. I've been building and working on computers for years. It's soo easy. You could try placing it on a laptop cooling pad also and that would increase the longevity of the ps3 by keeping it cooler & therefore keep the fan from running at high rpm. And please dust your ps3 once a week
P.S. Firmware 3.15 has a data transfer utility. And yes the system would need to be able to stay on for more than 5 mins, so my first suggestion is a box fan & test it to see if that helps. If not there's always opening your window and using a box fan to chill it. Or for that matter there always the freezer approach that's always fun. Either way you choose you can get the job done. Or you can just be upset & do nothing but please an xbox 360 is just not the economical decision. Best of luck.
Iv fixed computers for about 7 yrs now i wouldn't attempt to fix my ps3 ...so thats saying something
Best of luck trying to fix a PS3 on your own. I would strongly urge against it. Unfortunately the option I see is to go through Sony. It will cause a lot less hassle in the end, and the warranty should still be valid.
This is the perfect blog for anyone who wants to know about this topic. You know so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I really would want...HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a subject thats been written about for years.
